What is Derby Lite?
Derby Lite, LLC is the creator of unique and effective Fitness Skating programs. We help folks remember how much fun it was to roller skate with friends 'back in the day' and provide a new way to work out that's never boring and always rewarding. The classes we've developed start at the very beginning with Learn-to-Skate skills and progress to Fitness Skating drills that are a truly great workout. There is no impact and we don't compete, but some of our members do go on to competitive roller derby leagues and other roller sports after falling in love with skating and realizing what it can do for the mind and body. We used to hold classes in locations across the country, but now we offer our curriculum for others to start their own classes. See more about Derby Lite
What is the difference between classes?
'Start Out' Learn-to-Skate is a series of 12 weekly one-hour Learn-to-Skate classes that teach participants the language of our program (coincidentally, the language of roller derby) and the basic skills necessary to move on to other Fitness Skating classes or just feel more confident at the roller rink with the kids.
'Roll Out' Fitness Skating classes provide a one-hour High Intensity Interval Training-based exercise class for continuing skaters looking for an on-skates workout that burns up to 1,000 calories in an hour while building lean muscle and strong hearts. This class ZOOMS by, and then ends with a blissful stretch sequence.
'Derby Lite' is the name of our classic workout based on the Skills & Drills of competitive women’s roller derby. Continuing skaters learn and improve skating skills and participate in roller derby-style drills in a ninety-minute to two hour class.
HERE's a nifty graphic that shows how the classes shake out.
How do I join a class?
Derby Lite no longer offers classes; instead, we help others start their own classes. We recommend asking Google or Facebook about roller skating classes near you.
How do I start my own roller skating class?
Do you have roller skating experience? Roller derby experience? (Even better!) A facility to skate in? An entrepreneurial spirit? A couple hours a day to devote to marketing and management? You can TOTALLY start a Fitness Skating class! That's what we're here for. See more about what it takes to bring our proven brand of Fitness Skating classes to your area, HERE, and then see further details and purchase the packages, HERE.
All we ask is that you create your own program and class names. Don't call 'em Derby Lite, Roll Out or Start Out, please and thank you.
What is Instructor Certification?
While every class package includes training for up to two instructors, in order to use the designation DERBY LITE Certified Fitness Skating Instructor, CFSI, individuals will need to register separately for the more intensive evaluation process. Do that HERE. You don't need to be Certified to lead classes… but it does add credibility and is always helpful in a bettering-yourself way to have professionals evaluate your skills.
How long does it take to start a Fitness Skating class?
We figure you can complete our online instructor training in about a day if you devote the time and focus on it. Take another week or two to come up with your own name and logo, and set up a website or Facebook page; then another 3-4 weeks to promote your classes and get folks signed up. From purchase to launch, anywhere from 4-8 weeks, depending on your energy level.
Can a roller derby league use Derby Lite class packages?
You bet! We think our 'Start Out' Learn-to-Skate program is the smartest thing a league can do to improve membership recruiting and community awareness, and teach minimum skills in the safest way possible. Or offer 'Roll Out' Fitness Skating as a revenue source for non-members or endurance training for members.
Would a roller rink benefit from Derby Lite class packages?
Heck yeah! Targeting the demographic market of women and moms in their 30s and 40s means you're reaching people with disposable income who can buy skates and gear, pay for ongoing classes, and will bring their kids and friends back for open skates and birthday parties.

How will I know if I can make money at this?
We've got a nifty calculator HERE where you can plug in some numbers to see.
Is roller skating good exercise?
Skating is fantastic exercise. It strengthens your bones, your muscles and your heart. It also releases endorphins, which makes it good for your mind and spirit, too. The average person will burn 6-8 calories per minute while skating (according to ACE FitnessMatters, Vol 1, No 4, 1995), so that would equate to 360-540 calories per hour just for rolling around a rink. Add in our High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with specifically designed workouts that build lean muscle and improve heart health, and we've seen FitBit reports of over 1,000 calories burned in an hour. Way to justify that margarita!
